THOMAS Fretwell was born ca 1767 in Virginia, son of William Fretwell and Judah / Judith _____. He married 18 April 1787, Louisa County, Virginia to Agness Crenshaw, daughter of William Crenshaw and Susannah _____. They resided near Free Union in Albemarle County. Thomas moved his wife and children west operating the Valley Furnace in Lebanon with his partner, Jesse Payne. Thomas died accidentally. His death was before 15 October 1808, Monongalia Co., [West] Virginia. Agness and the children moved to Bourbon Co., Kentucky..Their known children: Susan, b. ca 1788 / 1791, m. Lemuel John; Nancy, b. 29 Nov 1789, m. Robert Palmer; Polly/Molly, b. ca 1793; Elizabeth, b. ca 1795, m1 Benonia Chaney and m2 Robert Donoho; Fanny Fretwell, b. ca 1797, m. Corbin R. CRENSHAW Fretwell was born between 1770-1780, son of William Fretwell and Judah / Judith _____. He was married by 1804 to Sarah Ann / Sally / Salley Crenshaw, sister of Garland A. Crenshaw and Robert Crenshaw. They resided near Ivy Creek in Albemarle County. Crenshaw died on or about 21 March 1846, Albemarle County, Virginia.  Their known children: Landon A., b. ca 1805 and never married; William W., b. 27 Sep 1806 and never married; John M., b. ca 1810, m. Mary Ann Foster; and Susan G., b. ca 1820 and never married.

JOHN Fretwell was born 8 October 1773, Orange County, Virginia, son of William Fretwell and Judah / Judith _____. He married 18 March 1799, Albemarle County, Virginia, Mildred Garth, daughter of Thomas Garth and Judith Long. They resided near the Mechum River in Albemarle County. John died 26 June 1837, Albemarle County, Virginia. He was buried in the Riverside Cemetery in Charlottsville. Their known children: Emily Crenshaw, b. 2 Jan 1802, m. Mortimer D. She married 6 November 1795 (bond), Albemarle County, Virginia, Elijah Garth, son of Thomas Garth and died 21 April 1802 / 04, Albemarle County, Virginia. Their known children: William Anderson Garth, b. 3 Oct 1796, m. Elizabeth Baker Saffaran; James Fretwell Garth, b. 19 May 1798, m. Mary Campbell Woods; Martha Crenshaw Garth, b. 8 Feb 1800, m. Fendall Jones Sebree and Littleton Thomas Garth, b.1 Nov 1801, m. Sarah C. Durrett.

WILLIAM Fretwell, Jr. was born before 1779 in Virginia, son of William Fretwell and Judah / Judith _____. married 18 December 1789 (bond), Louisa County, Virginia. Jemima Crenshaw, daughter of William A. Crenshaw, Jr. and Susanna Brooks Carr. They resided in Albemarle County and appeared on the tax list of St. Anne's Parish in 1800. William died before 1 December 1806 Albemarle County, Virginia. Their known children: Hudson, b. ca 1795, m. Elizabeth Burnley; Judith, b. ca 1795, m. Benjamin Hescott Brown; Nancy, b. ca 1796, m. Augustus Stephenson; Susannah, b. ca 1799, m. William Brown; and William Crenshaw, b. ca 1805, m1 Mildred O. Burnley and m2 Vienna Kinsolving.

Family of John (1738/39 - 1820)

MUSCOW Fretwell was baptized 3 March 1771, St. James, Northam Parish, Goochland County, Virginia, the son of John Fretwell and Mary Bullock. He signed a legislative petition 24 Nov 1795 in Hanover County, Virginia. Then, he sued Richard Johnson for trespass 10 Aug 1798 in Albemarle County, Virginia. The suit continued against Richard Johnson 7 Nov 1798 in Albemarle County, Virginia and the suit was annexed 7 May 1799 in Albemarle County, Virginia. No further records have been found in the court order books after that date. No known children.  Muscow Fretwell died before 12 April 1803, Allegany County, Maryland.

He was a soldier in the War of 1812 in the mounted infantry militia of Mississippi Territory. He was a merchant and partner with his brother, Alexander Fretwell in Albemarle Co., Virginia. He named his brother, Richard, as his executor when his will was written 6 February 1824. John died by 1827, Adams County, Mississippi. No known children.

NANSIE Fretwell was born 22 September 1774 and baptized 8 January 1775, St. James, Northam Parish, Goochland County, Virginia, daughter of John Fretwell and Mary Bullock. She married first William Crenshaw before 1803. Their known children: Meredith G. Crenshaw; Pattie / Patsey Crenshaw, m (bond / 1798) Hardin Turner and Ann Crenshaw. After William Crenshaw's death, Nancie married second David Higgason, 26 March 1803 (bond), Goochland County, Virginia. The bond was signed by her mother, named Mourning Fretwell.

ALEXANDER Fretwell was born between 1765 and 1784 in Virginia, the son of John Fretwell and ______. He was married 26 September 1804, Albemarle County, Virginia to Jane Hughes, daughter of William Hughes and Mary ______ . He was a merchant and partner with his brother, John Fretwell, in Albemarle Co., Virginia. Alexander's store was in Warren. He died by 3 August 1825, Albemarle County, Virginia.  No known children.

RICHARD B. Fretwell was born between 1780 and 1790 in Virginia, son of John Fretwell and _____. He was married 8 March 1810 Adams County, Mississiippi to Mary K. Gibson. Richard was a soldier in the War of 1812 in the cavalry of the Mississippi Territory in 1813. He settled in Christian Co., Kentucky with his family and parents. After their deaths, Richard moved to Vicksburg, Mississippi and died there before 1840. Their known children: John Richard, b. ca 1815, m1 ________, m2 Caroline B. Saltmarsh, m3 Mrs. Juliette C.E.W. WILLIAM Fretwell was born between 1774 and 1784 in Virginia, the son of John Fretwell and _____. He headed a household in Rockingham Co., North Carolina in 1800 and was married after that to Nancy _____. He enlisted 22 November 1812 in the Tenth Infantry, U. S. Army in North Carolina. The muster roll for Capt. Nelson's Company listed his death on 29 November 1813. Nancy Fretwell, the widow of William Fretwell, married second Michael Davis in 1815. Nancy Fretwell, child and heir of William Fretwell, made a claim for one hundred sixty acres of land. She hired an attorney, James Sharp, to make her claim against the estates of "John Fretwell or Alexander Fretwell, both late of the county of Albemarle and the commonwealth of Virginia which interest I claim through my Decd. Father William Fretwell, who was one of the brothers of the said John and Alexander Fretwell...." . Known children: Nancy, m. Green McBride.

FRANCES Fretwell was born ca 1780 -1790 in Virginia, daughter of John Fretwell and ______. Frances was married 8 March 1810 Christian County, Kentucky to William H. Harris. They resided in Christian County. Only known child: John Harris.

JAMES B. Fretwell was born ca 1789 in Virginia, the son of John Fretwell and ______. In 1825, James B. Fretwell is granted letters of administration for the estate of Alexander Fretwell. In 1837, he makes the final distribution of Alexander's estate to the heirs, including Jane Fretwell, the widow of Alexander Fretwell. James B. Fretwell never married. He died by 1 February 1869 in Albemarle Co., Virginia. He had outlived most of his family but indicates that his niece, Nancy Fretwell McBride is still alive and a few other "half" relatives. No known children.

He married 2 September 1822 Albemarle Co., Virginia, Sarah Jane Barksdale, daughter of Samuel Barksdale and Jemima Wingfield. They resided in Albemarle County and after 1840 in Lewis County. MARY Fretwell was born between 1774 and 1794 in Virginia, daughter of Alexander Fretwell and Nancy Ann Barksdale. She was one of six females [daughters] living with Alexander in 1810 in Albemarle County. Mary stayed with her father into his old age for which Alexander acknowledged Mary in a Deed of Gift in 1825. Mary was supported by her brother, Richard, and resided with him after 1840 in Lewis County, [West] Virginia. No known children.

ELIZABETH Fretwell was born ca 1765-1784 in Virginia and assumed to be the daughter of Thomas Fretwell and the sister of Leonard Fretwell. She was married ca 1797, Prince Edward County, Virginia to Leander Hughes, son of Powell Hughes and Elizabeth Coleman. Elizabeth and Leander left Virginia and settled in Tennessee in 1810. Elizabeth died ca 1815 Smith County, Tennessee. Their known children: son, b. ca 1798; Gideon Hughes, b. ca 1800, m. Elizabeth Paris; Gillie Hughes, b. ca 1801, m. RICHARD Fretwell was born before 1783 in Virginia. It is assumed that he is the son of Thomas Fretwell and the brother of Leonard Fretwell. He appeared on the Buckingham Co., VA personal property tax list in 1804 and the Campbell County, VA personal property tax list for 1810, 1811, 1812 and 1814, along with Thomas in Buckingham County and Nancy Ann in Campbell County. Richard married 6 March 1813 Campbell County, Virginia, Margaret Mann, daughter of Richard Mann. They were the parents of one daughter and it is assumed Margaret Mann Fretwell died shortly thereafter.   Richard died by 29 December 1815 Campbell County, Virginia. Leonard Fretwell relinquished the administration of Richard's estate to George McAllister. Miss Margaret Fretwell, an orphan, married Peter S. Woodbridge in 1833, Campbell Co., Virginia. They were the parents of seven known children (corrected May 2007).

CHARLES Fretwell was born ca 1780 - 1790. It is assumed that he was born in Cumberland Co., Virginia and is one of the three children of Thomas Fretwell shown on the tax list of 1782. Shortly afterward, in 1784, Thomas Fretwell was granted three hundred fifty acres of land for himself and three children in Washington Co., Georgia. It is assumed that Thomas took his children to Georgia and left them with his sister, Mary Fretwell Byrom or other family members in Georgia. Shortly thereafter,  Thomas Fretwell reappeared in Cumberland Co., Virginia. It is assumed that he married again and started a second family.
     Charles Fretwell married 29 May 1804 (intentions), Richmond County, Georgia, Esther Anderson, daughter of Elijah Anderson and Levina Brack. They resided in Jefferson and Houston Counties. Charles died before 1840, Houston County, Georgia  Their known children: son, b. ca 1804; Littleton B., b. ca 1806, m. Lavina Netherland; daughter, b. ca 1810 - 1820; daughter, b. ca 1810 - 1820; Charles W., b. ca 1815, m. Mahala Green; Eleazor Anderson, b. 7 Jan 1818, m. LEONARD Fretwell was born 11 October 1787 in Virginia. It is assumed that he is the son of Thomas Fretwell and Nancy Ann ______. He appeared on the Buckingham Co., Virginia personal property tax lists for 1809 and 1810 and Campbell Co., Virginia personal property tax list for 1811, 1812 and 1815 along with Thomas in Buckingham County and Nancy Ann in Campbell County. Leonard married. 20 October 1810, Campbell County, Virginia, Nancy Ann Timberlake, daughter of Charles Timberlake and Mildred Creddle. They resided in Campbell Co., Virginia, Rockingham Co., North Carolina and Pittsylvania Co., Virginia. In 1833, Leonard settled in Lewis Co., Missouri and died by 27 February 1836 Lewis County, Missouri. Their known children: James S., b. 3 Sep 1811, m. Lizzie Brewer; Charles, b. ca 1812, m. JAMES Fretwell was born ca 1795 in Virginia. It is assumed that he was the son of Thomas Fretwell and Nancy Ann ______. He appeared on the Campbell Co., Virginia personal property tax list for 1814, along with Nancy Ann Fretwell, Richard Fretwell and Leonard Fretwell. He also appeared on the Lynchburg, Virginia personal property tax list for 1817. James married 2 November 1829, Amherst County, Virginia to Rhoda S. Edwards. They resided in Lynchburg. James died 17 November 1876, Campbell County, Virginia.  Only known child: Elizabeth Ann, b. ca 1831, m. George R. Hall.

LUCY Fretwell was born ca 1795 - 1797 in Virginia. In her obituary, it is stated that Lucy was the daughter of Thomas Fretwell and Nancy Ann Fretwell. Lucy was married 9 May 1814, Campbell County, Virginia to Thomas Edward Lucado, son of Isaac Lucado and Sally Noell. Lucy died 7 July 1867, Campbell County, Virginia and was buried in Springhill Cemetery, Lynchburg, Virginia.  Their known children: Nancy Lucado, m. C. Johnson; James Lucado, m. MARY W. Fretwell was born in Virginia. It is assumed that she was the daughter of Thomas Fretwell and Nancy Ann Fretwell and said to be the sister of Lucy Fretwell Lucado. Mary was married 11 October 1824, Buckingham County, Virginia to Elisha Lucado, son of Isaac Lucado and Sallie Noel. Her death is unknown.  Their known children: William Lucado, b. ca 1830; Abner Lucado, b. ca 1832, m. Nancy Jennings; Robert M. Lucado, b. ca 1834, m. Family of Joseph (     - 1785)

SAMUEL Fretwell was born ca 1771, son of Joseph Fretwell and Mary _____. In 1785, Samuel chose Mary Fretwell as his guardian in Surry Co., North Carolina. By 1794, he resided in Montgomery Co., North Carolina and sold his father's land in Surry County. A Samuel Fretwell heads a household in 1800 in Pendleton Co., SC and again in 1830 in Marion Co., Alabama. Family of James (     - bef 1830)

MICAJAH H. Fretwell was born ca 1780 - 1790 in Virginia, the son of James Fretwell and Lucy Harris. He was married 11 November 1804 Greene County, Georgia to Jane L. Harper, daughter of Robert Harper, Jr. and Ann _____. He was in the 2nd Regt., Georgia State Troops during the War of 1812. He died during his service on 19 November 1813. Letters of administration were filed in Jasper County, Georgia. His widow and orphan children settled in Morgan Co., Georgia. Their known children: Nancy Fretwell, b. 19 Jan 1806, m. Alvah Hodge; Robert Harper Fretwell, Sr., b. 11 Jun 1808, m1 Mrs. Mary Harris Langford and m2 Sarah Ann Wright; Albert A Fretwell., b. 12 Jul 1810; and Mary Ann Fretwell, b. 8 Apr 1812, m. Marcus S. Haygood.

WILLIAM Fretwell was born before 1775 in Virginia, the assumed son of James Fretwell and Lucy Harris. He was married by 1800 to Anna [Cullen]. They resided in Greene Co., Georgia. It is assumed that Jane, the widow of Micajah H. Fretwell, and her four children live with William in 1820 in Greene County and Cullen A. and James, the oldest children of William and Anna, live in 1820 in Jasper County with James and Lucy Fretwell, their grandparents.
     William died by 15 November 1822 Greene County, Georgia.  Their known children: Cullen A., b. ca 1801, m. Elizabeth M. Henderson; James, b. ca 1803, m. _________ Herndon; Wiliam, Jr., b. ca 1805; John, b. ca 1807; Nancy, b. ca 1809, m. William Kelly; Julia, b. ca 1811, m. Edward Cobb; Amanda, b. ca 1813, m. John J. Burrow; daughter, b. ca 1815 and d.y.; Elizabeth, b. 11 Aug 1817, m. Josiah Mims; Sally, b. ca 1819, m. Benjamin Franklin Scott; and Daniel Fretwell, b. ca 1821.

Family of Richard (1752 - 1842)

LEONARD Fretwell was born 11 January 1789 in Georgia, the son of Richard Fretwell and Frances _____, his second wife. Leonard was married 17 March 1811 Morgan County, Georgia to Mary "Polly / Polley" Zimmerman, daughter of Phillip Zimmerman and Elizabeth Hammons. Leonard was a soldier in the Georgia Militia during the War of 1812. His widow, Mary Zimmarman [sic] Fretwell, applied for a pension after his death. Leonard died 13 September 1872 Butts County, Georgia. Their known children: Richard, b. 11 Nov 1811, m. Emeline E. Tucker; Martha H., b. 16 Feb 1814, m. Samuel Andrew Brown; Frances, b. 25 Sep 1816, m. Merriwether L. Kennon; Leonard, Jr., b. 4 Mar 1819, m1 Caroline Amanda Wiley, m2 Teresa A. Barber Vaughn and m3 Margaret E. Wallace Parrott; Nancy, b. 24 Jan 1822 - 26; Elizabeth, b. 13 May 1824, m? William Hodges; William A. J., b. 13 Mar 1826, m. Joannah E. Barber; Philip Zimmerman, b. 27 Sep 1828, m. Amanda M. Loyall; and Mary Rebecca, b. 20 Oct 1831.

Family of Leonard (     - 1820)

JOHN Fretwell was born ca 1795 in Georgia, the son of Leonard Fretwell and _____. John was married by 1820 and residing with wife, Nancy in Putnam County, Georgia. John died by 3 May 1824 Putnam County, Georgia. No known children.

MARTHA Fretwell was born ca 1795 in Georgia, the daughter of Leonard Fretwell. Martha was married 30 March 1820, Putnam County, Georgia to Jesse Little. It is not known when she died.  No known children.

MARY Fretwell was born in Georgia, the daughter of Leonard Fretwell. Mary married William Choice after her father died in 1820. It is assumed that Mary continued to live in Putnam Co., Georgia dying before 1846. Her only son is a minor at the time of her death. In a lawsuit, Choice vs. Marshall in Putnam County, the sale of slaves by William Choice is challenged by Leonard F. Choice.  Only known Child: Leonard Fretwell Choice.
